SUP around Kalvø

Sail past the marina, notice the remnants of the former 19^th-century shipyard and see whether you can spot the Viking longboat “Imme Gram”. The ship is put in storage on the shore in the winter, but during the summer months it floats in the waters off the coast of Kalvø.

The small island of Kalvø, which is located in the beautiful bay of Genner Bugt just north of Aabenraa, is an ideal destination for all those with a love of nature and the great outdoors.

The island is well protected against the elements and is surrounded by wonderful countryside. Today the island is a nature and wildlife reserve rich in flora and fauna, whilst various species of birds, in particular, thrive in the area.

The island’s status as a nature and wildlife reserve means that motorised boats, jet-skis, water scooters and the like may not be used in the protected zones. SUPs, canoes og kayaks continue to be permitted in some areas. This also means that the area is peaceful and idyllic, with no disturbances from noisy motorboats, etc. 

Sailing, rowing, surfing and SUPing are just not permitted in the waters south and west of the island.

You can choose to begin your trip directly from Kalvø. Drive across the dam and leave your car at the island’s car park. You can easily begin from the marina or from one of the island’s small out-of-the-way places accessible from the coast.

The island boasts a wealth of outdoor activities and events throughout the year. For example, Det Maritime Kalvø association hosts the popular “shipyard day” in the middle or end of August every year. The event is free and enables you to see how Kalvø appeared in the 19^th century, with its shipyard, traditional handicrafts, folk dancing, speeches, games and firing of the historic guns at Auroras Kanonlaug. It’s a day for the whole family, with the island’s shipyard museum throwing open its doors and offering free entry.
