Sitting woman

The bronze sculpture from 1993 stands at Kerteminde Nye Kirkegård. It has been deposited here by the New Carlsberg Foundation.

The artist

Hanne Varming's special strength is a keen eye for sculptural motifs in everyday situations. It could be a woman walking through the park with a child on her hip or a street vendor in Morocco.

Her sensitivity and empathy for the specifics of the individual person is strong. She has a very special relationship with old wives, a motif she started working with while the family lived on Femø. That motive has followed her for over twenty years. Soon the wife is sitting on a chair, a box or a bench, soon she is standing in a doorway, perhaps with another wife. In these sculptures, Hanne Varming works strongly towards the simplified, almost caricaturing image with an emphasis on the sculptural idiom.

Her ability to reproduce a spatial illusion in the low relief has made her a used sculptor of medals and coins. She has also made sculptures of supernatural size and sculpture groups that seem to have crawled down from the plinth to blend naturally with everyday life, e.g. Family group at the gable of the Old Town Hall in Hjørring and Viking descendants in Aalborg.
