Moat of "Sjørring Volde"

One of Denmark's impressive and well-preserved castle systems.

Sjørring Volde, with its deep moat and mound, is one of the most impressive and well preserved castle systems - a so-called motte-plant, consisting of a square's central bank, Motten, surrounded by moats and ramparts. The bank rises 7.5 m. above the pit bottom, now leveled completely flat. The moats outside banks are up to 9 m. high. An excavation in 1945-46 found that the sides of the pit were formed of stacked sod. It also found the remains of a wooden bridge that led across the western tomb to the central bank. The mounds have, for many years, been a place for school gymnastics competitions and festivals.
